bad appeal to authority.

"Bad appeal to authority" seems like a fancy term for peer pressure. When you hear the phrase, “Come on, everyone is doing it,” it's a common "bad appeal to authority" case. We tend to believe in our friends because we can trust them. Although this really shouldn’t be the case because they may know what they’re talking about, but they could just be acting. People should keep in mind that unless there’s other evidence to show that what they are saying is true, you shouldn’t believe in it.

Actors and actresses on our favorite television shows and movies are perfect examples of this. We tend to believe in what they are doing is truly them because they are so confident in it. In reality, they’re just acting out a character. Most of the time, the character they are portraying is far from what they are in real life. It happens to me all the time. Whenever I watch GLEE, I always think that the actor playing Artie (a character who’s wheelchair bound) can’t walk. But after seeing dozens of interviews and seeing him in real life perform, I know he can walk. There’s no further proof to believe that he can’t walk, other than a tv show character. He's really convincing though...

  1. Hey there, interesting choice of concept to review, but I think it's one of the more important concepts in this section as well. The way you related your example to acting was unique, as it demonstrated an example of this concept that was not pressure or lying. The second and third sentences of the first paragraph confused me at first when reviewing this concept, but after looking at the book it made sense - so you might want to be careful about your wording in situations like that. Otherwise I really enjoyed your post, it helped me understand this concept quite a bit more.

  2. Hello there cvgotsoul! I thought this part of Chapter 5 was also interesting (I blogged about it also). I totally agree with you that it's just another (fancy) word for peer pressure. I talked about the peer pressure I get from my friends with drinking. But anyways, your example was just convincing and great! It's happened to me also. I've repeatedly watched countless TV shows and with that, the character a certain actor or actress portrays gets stuck in my head. I would think that they're like that in reality, but really they're not. They're just acting and we make the mistake of the "bad appeal to authority."
