The advertisement that I chose is for TOMs eyewear. It’s a fairly new product from the company, and like its shoes, if you buy a pair, it will provide a pair of glasses to people in need.
From personal experience, I can trust this ad because it’s a company that I’m familiar with. Also, they have been around for a few years. Although I don’t really know if they do really give back. I can only find so many pictures of the company actually giving a pair of shoes or a pair of glasses to needy people.
From this ad alone, it’s really difficult to judge whether or not this is a reliable ad. It features two Caucasian people wearing the kind of glasses this company sells, but it doesn’t really show that they are the type of people to give back. They look like they’re fairly wealthy from what they are wearing. It is a bit misleading because, if I’m not mistaken, it’s suppose to represent everyday people being able to wear and purchase this product. Yet, the clothes that they are wearing in this ad are far from everyday wear. I don’t know anyone that dresses this fancy.
Overall, the ad is very subtle, using little text. I guess this company is going by the saying, "A picture's worth a thousand words."
Hey Chynna! I love the ad that you chose to write about. Toms is a really great organization that I really care about. Back in 2009, I did a huge project about Toms and what they’re all about. For your ad, I totally believe in what you are saying. The people projected in the ad are pretty well off, they look well dressed and well presented. For them to have a pair of Toms sunglasses means they have at least $100 just to pay for them. When “everyday” people are purchasing these sunglasses, they are “giving back”. But how do we know they are giving back? Well from what I researched and without getting into too much details, Toms really care about their one-for-one program. This is what they are known and famous for. There are so many stories about how people help and pictures to support their stories to actually gain credibility to their company. So by experience, Toms is a reliable source.

ReplyDeletegreat post of the tom eyeglasses and analysis of whether they are actually donating to the less fortune it. I agree with you the people portrayed in the picture seems very well off and their clothing states that they do have money. I have often donated to numerous charity. Like last week I gave this lady standing outside of target a dollar in your donation box because it looks like no one was really paying attention to her. So I decided to give her a dollar. Yet, I was in a rush so I was not sure which organization I gave it to. or what if she didn't belong to an organization and she's just sitting there getting money. anyways, great post!

I love TOMS shoes and I never brought a pair of sunglasses yet. This program looks very legit but there are times that I wonder if they are telling the truth. A lot of people have the fundraising thing as a marketing scam so the company can get more money. There are many times that I question if the money does go to the organization or really to the people in need. So normally I do not donate money unless I know that the company is legit. If I don’t know if the company is legit, I will just give a little bit. I do believe that TOMS is a good company that keeps their promise. I have not heard anything bad or sketchy about this company yet.
ReplyDeleteHey there! I would like to start out saying your blog was enjoyable to read! I actually have heard very little about Tom’s brand. And what little I know is from commercials that talk about them giving back to those in need. Referring to your personal experience is one of the steps of accepting a claim. But you are right, just looking at the ad, I had no idea if the brand or ad in general was legitimate. Just looking at the ad it does, I was not able to connect the brand with the cause. Because of this I was more curious but still skeptical of is validity.
